Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas is a clinical neuroscientist, applied microbiologist and nutritionist known for his work in nutrition for mental health and a background that spans over two decades of work in both clinical and non-clinical roles in healthcare, scientific research, and technology. Miguel’s approach blends neuroscience and nutrition to make sense of the connection between the human gut microbiome and brain/mental health from a transdisciplinary perspective, driven by a deep passion for the therapeutic power of food, and how informed food choices and behaviour change can significantly enhance wellbeing. This was the theme of his doctoral degree, for which he received the prestigious Santander Bank’s “Work-Based Learning Award” in 2016.
Shortly after completing a five-year fellowship researching the links between food, mood and cognitive health in a project sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund in 2023, Miguel was made an Honorary Research Fellow at Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, where he continues to look into the links between nutrition, gut microbes and emotional wellbeing.
In addition to his research work, Miguel has extensive experience in working with private individuals in the areas of addiction, mood disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions. In recent years, he’s developed a specialism in neurodevelopment conditions like ADHD.
